Teen Charged with Setting Fire on School Bus in Charles County


WALDORF, Md. (November 15, 2007) – Deputy State Fire Marshal’s have charged a 13-year-old male with setting fire to combustibles while riding on a school bus. The eighth grade student of John Hanson Middle School was traveling home on bus # 112 en route to the Pine Field area when the incident occurred.

The fire was set on the afternoon of November 11, 2007 while the juvenile was seated in the very rear of the bus. The juvenile ignited combustibles then threw the burning debris out of the window of the moving bus. There were no damages or injuries reported as a result of the fire.

The incident was not reported until later that evening by a concerned parent who called the Charles’s County Crime Solvers tip line.

There were forty-five students on the bus at the time of the fire.

The juvenile was taken into custody on yesterday afternoon and has been charged with reckless endangerment. He has been released to the custody of parents and awaits further action by the Department of Juvenile Services.
