Hospice Challenge 2007 Seeks to Aid Local Organizations

SOUTHERN MARYLAND - On July 21, 2007, Calvert Hospice, Hospice of St. Mary's, the Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation, the Rotary International Scholarship Fund, the Southern Maryland Sailing Association and Screwpile will join together in their unprecedented effort to host Hospice Challenge 2007. The event, scheduled as part of the 15th annual Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge, is designed to raise funds primarily to benefit Calvert Hospice and Hospice of St. Mary's.

The Hospice Challenge 2007 events will serve as an introduction to the Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge which launches on Sunday. The Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge has drawn sailors from all over to Southern Maryland for the past 14 years. "This is a wonderful opportunity for a whole new group of people to learn about Hospice," said Stovy Brown, Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation President.

Hospice Challenge 2007 consists of a dinghy team race, post-race party and Boston Whaler raffle. The dinghy team race will take place at 1:45 p.m. on the Patuxent River, off the northern end of the Solomons Island Boardwalk. Teams will man three Flying Juniors, supplied by the Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation, each with a skipper and crew. Entry is limited to the first sixteen teams. Forms and fees must be submitted at the Southern Maryland Sailing Association Club House, on Main Street in Solomons Island, before 12:00 noon on July 21, 2007.

Awards will be given at the post-race party held at 6:00 p.m. in the SMSA Club House. A featured part of the evening will be the raffling of a 15-foot Boston Whaler, outboard motor and trailer. Tickets for the raffle are on sale now, priced at $20. Only 1,250 tickets will be sold, so each entrant has a good chance to win this classic boat.
