ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Congressman and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer will deliver the commencement address at the 2007 St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM) graduation ceremony Sat., May 12, at 10 a.m. on the Townhouse Green of the SMCM campus.
Congressman Hoyer's speech will address the world graduates will enter and the relevance of their careers and futures to the country. One of the predominant themes will be the idea of civility and the importance of treating others with dignity and respect.
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer represents Maryland's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties and portions of Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties. A resident of Mechanicsville, MD, Congressman Hoyer is now serving his 14th term, making him the longest-serving Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Southern Maryland in history. Congressman Hoyer is also a member of the SMCM Board of Trustees.
In November 2006, Congressman Hoyer was elected by his colleagues in the Democratic Caucus to serve as House Majority Leader in the 110th Congress. His election as Majority Leader -the second-highest position in the House - makes him the highest-ranking Member of Congress from Maryland in history.
