Nine Children Present at Playground When Suspected Gang-Bangers Stage Gun Fight using Handguns and Shotguns

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office today reported that a "gunfight" took place on Suburban Drive in Lexington Park on Tuesday evening. One victim was flown to a hospital. Another man is believed to have been injured, but he fled the scene before police arrived. Two men were arrested and other suspects are being sought.

Police determined that three vehicles drove into the area and began shooting at five individuals. Police also say that approximately nine children were in the immediate area at the time of the gunfire. Suburban Drive is the only road into a mobile home park which occupies that immediate area.

On Tuesday, April, 24 at approximately 6 p.m. police units responded to the area of the playground on Suburban Drive in Lexington Park for the report of numerous gunshots. Upon arriving, officers determined that a gunfight had taken place and requested the St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) respond to assume the investigation.

BCI investigators determined that three vehicles drove onto Suburban Drive in Lexington Park, to the area of the playground, which was occupied by approximately nine children. Approximately ten suspects exited the vehicles and began firing shotguns and handguns at five people who were in the area of a residence on Suburban Drive. Two of the victims returned gun fire and the suspects fled the area.

One male victim was flown to P.G. Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 7 for shotgun wounds to his upper body. His injuries were non-life threatening. Police do not consider the man to be a suspect.

A second male victim is believed to have been shot and he fled the area prior to police arrival. The extent of his injuries is unknown. Police say the man is not a suspect in this incident.  However, they believe he is wanted on an unrelated warrant.

BCI arrested Deshawn A. Carey, 18, from Lexington Park and Anthony L. Brooks, 26, from Lexington Park. Both were charged with First Degree Assault, Attempted First Degree Murder, and Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder. Both men were in the group of approximately ten shooters who entered the area in three vehicles.  They are incarcerated at the St. Mary's County Detention Center.

Additional suspects are being sought and the incident is being looked into as possibly gang related. Police say additional charges are pending a review of the case with the State's Attorney.
