LA PLATA, Md. - The Charles County Sheriff's Department today released the following incident and arrest reports.

RECOVERED STOLEN HANDGUN: On Jan. 20 at 2:29 a.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to St. Thomas Drive in Waldorf for the report of shots fired. Officers found two men walking in the parking lot of Smallwood Village Center and discovered a loaded handgun on the ground nearby the men. Officers confirmed the handgun was stolen from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Washington, D.C. Through their investigation, officers determined Derek Anthony Carroll, 21, of Waldorf fired the shots.

Carroll was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, carrying a handgun and theft valued at more than $500. He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner. Officer L. Elliot is investigating.

ARMED ROBBERY: On Jan. 18 at 7:46 p.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to Plaza Liquors located at 3215 Plaza Way in Waldorf for the report of an armed robbery. Investigation revealed the suspect entered the business, brandished a handgun, robbed the owner of an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene on foot. Officers and a K9 team searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect was wearing dark clothing and a mask. The owner, a 39-year-old Waldorf man, was not injured.

POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA: On Jan. 16 at 3:55 p.m., Charles County Sheriff’s Officer A. Celia was patrolling Rathbone Court in Waldorf when he observed an 18-year-old Waldorf man hanging out the window of a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The man fell out of the window and the vehicle sped away. Officer Celia conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and discovered its occupants were in possession of marijuana.

Investigation revealed the 18-year-old man was having a drug-related dispute with the occupants of the car and when he reached inside the car, the driver sped away.

The driver, Marc Carlyle McLaughlin, 17, of Waldorf was arrested and charged as an adult with first- and second-degree assault, possession of marijuana and numerous traffic charges. McLaughlin was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending his appearance before the district court commissioner.

McLaughlin’s passengers, 15- and 17-year-old boys of Waldorf, were arrested and charged as juveniles with second-degree assault and possession of marijuana. The boys were released to the custody of their parents.

The victim was not injured.
