LA PLATA, Md. - The Charles County Sheriff's Department today released the following incident and arrest reports.

ASSAULT BY SHOTGUN: On Jan. 3 at 11:19 p.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to a residence in the 12800 block of Riverside Road in Nanjemoy for the report of a shooting. Investigation revealed the victim was lying in bed when he was shot in the arm with a pellet from a shotgun. Just prior to the shooting, the victim heard a vehicle with a loud exhaust pass his residence and then heard a sound he believed was the vehicle backfiring. He then felt pain in his arm, realized he had been shot with a pellet and notified police. The victim, a 47-year-old man, was transported by ambulance to Fort Washington Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, at 11:22 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 3100 block of Port Tobacco Road for the report of another shooting. Investigation revealed the residence had been struck by a round from a shotgun. The victim reported hearing a vehicle with a loud exhaust leave the area after the shooting. No one was injured. MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH: On Jan. 3 at 6:38 a.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to St. Charles Parkway and Post Office Road in Waldorf for the report of a motor vehicle crash. Investigation revealed a 1995 Ford Taurus was traveling north on St. Charles Parkway and attempted to turn left onto Post Office Road but failed to yield the right of way to a 2005 Toyota Camary. Investigation revealed the driver of the Ford, Michael Christopher Nero, 28, of Oxon Hill, was intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and failing to yield right of way on a left turn. He sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash but refused medical treatment. The driver of the Toyota, Gerado Alberto Hernandez, 24, of San Antonio, Tx., was not injured. Both Nero and Hernandez were wearing seatbelts. Nero was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner. Officer R. Glover of the Traffic Operations Unit investigated.

POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA: On Dec. 21 at 10:31 p.m., Charles County Sheriff’s Office Det. D. Gross was conducting holiday patrol in Waldorf when he observed a suspicious vehicle parked in the 2500 block of Business Park Court. The vehicle was occupied by the driver and a passenger and a computer check of its tags revealed no record of the tags through MVA. The vehicle began to leave the parking lot and Det. Gross attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver refused to stop. The vehicle turned onto Acton Lane and then onto Enterprise Place, and stopped the vehicle near Lariat Place. The passenger exited the vehicle and fled the scene. The driver, James Edward Sanders, 21, of Waldorf, was arrested without further incident for fleeing and eluding police. A search of his vehicle revealed marijuana located in the ashtray and passenger floorboard. Sanders was charged with possession of marijuana and fleeing and eluding and was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner.
