LEONARDTOWN, Md. - Mrs. Cathy Allen, member of the Board of Education of St. Mary's County, has been elected secretary of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) and chair of MABE's Legislative Committee.
"Mrs. Allen has served in a number of leadership positions representing local boards of education," said Dr. Carl W. Smith, executive director of MABE. "Her election to the position of secretary is a tribute to the respect her colleagues have for her and the confidence they have in her."
Founded in 1957, MABE is a private, non-profit organization made up of board of education members from counties throughout Maryland. MABE sponsors in-service activities for board members through an annual conference, orientation programs for new board members, and workshops on key topics. MABE's elected Board of Directors holds regular informal meetings with the State Board of Education. MABE represents the school board point of view with the Maryland General Assembly and the United States Congress through its Legislative Committee and Federal Relations Network. The organization also monitors and reports to its members and the public about current education issues through its publications: The Monitor, MABE e-Brief, Directory, and School Board Manual. MABE is an active member of the National School Boards Association (NSBA) and maintains close contact with other organizations interested in public education.
"I am honored to have been selected as secretary of MABE and chair of the association's Legislative Committee," said Mrs. Allen. "I intend to continue to work collaboratively on behalf of the students of St. Mary's County and the state. I am excited by the challenge and will continue to work tirelessly to represent St. Mary's County Public Schools as well as the Maryland Association of Boards of Education."
