LA PLATA, Md. - On October 30, 2006 at 8:13 p.m., Sgt. J. Harmon of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office observed a passenger car traveling east at a high rate of speed on Hawthorne Road in La Plata. Sgt. Harmon attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver did not stop. The vehicle turned onto Ripley Road and nearly struck a pick-up truck stopped at the stop sign on Ripley Road. The driver stopped in his driveway in the 6300 block of Teresa Lane and exited the vehicle.
He was arrested and identified as Hugh Allen McClaugherty, III, 41, of La Plata. He was charged with reckless driving, fleeing and eluding, speeding and unsafe lane change.
He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner.
