On Sept. 26 at 2:34 a.m., Charles County Sheriffs officers were requested to assist the King George County, Va., Sheriffs Office and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police with a sport-utility vehicle that refused to stop on Crain Highway in Newburg. The driver had reportedly been involved in an assault and was wanted on a felony warrant in King George County.
The Transportation Authority Police deployed stop sticks as the SUV left the Nice Bridge, which caused the passenger-side tires to deflate. The SUV continued north on Crain Highway to Bel Alton and Charles County Sheriffs officers deployed stop sticks, which deflated the vehicles remaining two tires. The SUV crossed the median and continued traveling north in the southbound lanes. Officers stopped the SUV near Balsam Run Road and the driver, Ryan Alexander Jones, 19, of Upper Marlboro, was arrested.
Jones was charged with fleeing and eluding, driving on a suspended license, speeding, reckless driving and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner. He will also be charged as a fugitive from justice for the King George County warrant. Officer D. Behm investigated.
