The Board of County Commissioners and the St. Mary's County Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services announced today that new playgrounds are scheduled to be installed at Elms Beach Park and at George B. Cecil Park in mid-October and should be ready for use by early November 2006.
Elms Beach Park is located at 19350 Back Door Road, off Bay Forest Road, in Lexington Park. The new playground is designed for children from ages 2 through 12 and will include poured-in-place rubberized surfacing to maximize safety and accessibility for individuals of all ability levels. The playground's innovative design features a "crazy bones" bridge, a hand-over-hand activity below the bridge and whirlwind climbers. The playground will also include a separate, accessible sound and music center.
George B. Cecil Park is located at 19241 St. George Church Road, in Valley Lee. This facility will also be designed for children ages 2 through 12 and include rubberized safety surfacing. Features for this new playground include two-story climbing areas and climbing boulders to maximize play experiences for children. Also, a challenging "play web" structure will be installed at the park - the first Playworld play web to be installed at a Maryland playground.
