Driver Falls Asleep Behind Wheel; Bicyclist Dies

According to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday September 25, 2006 at 3:18 p.m. Dfc. Todd Smith responded to the scene of a collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist on Md. Rt. 4 in the area of Whispering Drive. Upon arrival, Dfc. Smith determined that the collision was serious and the Calvert County Crash Reconstruction Unit was summoned.

The initial investigation revealed that a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus driven by Andrew J. Hall, 25 of St. Leonard, had been traveling southbound on Md. Rt. 4 approaching Whispering Drive when he fell asleep and ran off onto the shoulder of the road, colliding with a sign support pole. The driver attempted to regain control of the vehicle when he swerved and struck the bicyclist, who was traveling northbound on the southbound shoulder. The bicyclist was ejected upon impact. He was treated at the scene by medics and then flown to Prince Georges County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The bicyclist has been identified as Kang Ming Lin, 49, of Prince Frederick. Charges against Mr. Hall are pending.
