Charles County Sheriff's Reports

MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH: On Sept. 1 at 8:04 a.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to the 8500 block of Penns Hill Road in La Plata for the report of a motor vehicle crash. Investigation revealed a tree fell on a Toyota Highlander traveling north on Penns Hill Road, crushing the windshield and roof of the vehicle. The Highlander left the roadway, struck a fence and came to rest in a ditch. The driver, Leann Douglas Keech, 34, of La Plata, sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Civista Medical Center. Keech’s children, ages 2 and 4, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also transported to Civista Medical Center. They were in child safety seats in the middle of the vehicle. It appears weather is the main factor, with moderate rain and 20 to 30 mph winds at the time of the crash. Speed is not a factor. Officer R. Taylor, Jr., of the Traffic Operations Unit is investigating.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY: On Sept. 1 at 3:36 a.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to a residence in the 10 block of Willow Lane in La Plata for the report of a burglary in progress. Upon Sgt. Bacon’s arrival, he discovered the suspect on the back porch next to the rear sliding door and arrested him. Investigation revealed the suspect, Theodore Alfred Bivins, 32, of no fixed address, was attempting to gain entry into the residence through the rear sliding door. He appeared to be intoxicated and the victim, a 33-year-old La Plata woman, was not acquainted with him and did not know why he was there. Bivins was charged with attempted fourth-degree burglary. He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner. Officer D. Chandler investigated.
