Calvert County Dfc. John M. (Marty) McCarroll responded to the area of Rt. 260 and Horace Ward Road in Owings on July 17 at 10:22 a.m. for the report of an assault. The victim was found lying on the ground bleeding heavily from facial injuries. The victim advised that he was hitchhiking along Rt. 260 when he observed a light blue colored Toyota Camry 4 door, occupied by two 16-20 year-old white males, pull out from Wards Chapel Road and travel eastbound on Rt. 260 towards Chesapeake Beach, passing the victim. After a few moments, the same car passed him again, slowed down and then came towards him for a third time. The passenger stood up through the sunroof and threw a bottle at the victim striking him in the face. The victim was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital (CMH) for treatment.
Since that time, the victim was flown by helicopter from CMH to the Washington Hospital Center for further advanced medical treatment and surgery for his injuries.
While conducting a follow-up investigation on July 18, Dfc. McCarroll discovered that Jeffrey L. Rogers, 18, of Chesapeake Beach was responsible for throwing the glass object from the vehicle. McCarroll made contact with Rogers, arrested him for assault and transported him to the Calvert County Detention Center.
