On July 23, 2006 at approximately 0010 hours, patrol officers from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police, Leonardtown Barrack, responded to the report of a motor vehicle collision on Lockes Crossing Road in the area of Copsey Corner Lane in Mechanicsville. Upon arriving on the scene, officers found a Ford F-250 pick-up truck on its side. The operator had been ejected.
Due to the severity of the collision, patrol officers requested that collision reconstructionists respond to the scene. Members of the Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
The investigation revealed that the Ford F-250 was traveling eastbound on Lockes Crossing Road in the area of Copsey Corner Lane when it left the eastbound shoulder and struck an embankment causing the vehicle to rollover several times. As the truck was rolling, the operator, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected. The operator of the vehicle was identified as a seventeen year old male juvenile from Mechanicsville. The juvenile was transported to St. Mary's Hospital by the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad. A short time later he was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore where he is listed in critical condition.
At this time alcohol and speed are both considered contributing factors in the collision. The Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team is continuing the investigation.
