ANNAPOLIS After being closed for nearly five months, the day use area of Calvert Cliffs State Park, located near the town of Lusby in Calvert County, will reopen on Saturday, July 15, 2006. The main area of the park was closed in order to make way for $800,000 worth of renovations.
The funds were used to repave parking areas and build a new lot for buses. In addition, improvements were made to stormwater management and a loop was created to reroute traffic and enable easier travel within the park. Park amenities include beach access for fossil and shark tooth hunting, an extensive trail system for hiking, a recycled tire playground, and a picnic area. A pavilion may also be reserved through the Maryland Park Service reservation system.
Calvert Cliffs will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and will be open until sunset. Camping is not permitted in the park. There is a $5 entrance donation for Maryland residents and a $6 donation for nonresidents. Calvert Cliffs is co-managed by the Friends of Calvert Cliffs State Park and all funds generated through the donation system go directly to supporting park operations and improvements.
