Mikulski & Democratic Women Challenge Republican Leadership

The Dean of the Senate Women, Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) on Wednesday joined her Democratic Women Senate colleagues on the Senate floor to call on Republican leadership to change direction, and address the "real needs and priorities" of the American people.

We have less than 50 days left in session to get something done"Republican leadership has squandered time, opportunity and taxpayer money. The Senate has spent time with bills focused on re-electing Republicans, instead of helping American families. It's time to bring real issues to the floor," said Senator Mikulski. "We have less than 50 days left in session to get something done. We don't have a lot of time, we have to move forward now to change the way we are doing things."

Senators discussed their "Checklist for Change," a list of nine issues Congress can immediately address to better the lives of the American people, which was originally unveiled at a press conference last week. The checklist contains the following items:

* Safeguard America's Pensions
* Keep Good Jobs in America
* Make College Affordable for All
* Protect America and Our Military Families
* Prepare for Future Disasters
* Make America Energy Independent
* Make Small Business Health Care Affordable
* Invest in Life-Saving Science
* Protect Our Air, Land and Water

More details are provided on the "Checklist for Change" website.

In a letter, Senator Mikulski said: "my colleagues and I believe that it is time for a change in Washington: change in agenda, change in tone, and change in direction. That's what our "checklist for change" is all about. This is what we women do - we need our checklists. And we challenge Majority Leader Bill Frist to make the issues on our checklist priorities for the American people this year."
