John Savich Elected President of Statewide Association


The St. Mary's County Board of Commissioners announced today that John Savich, Director, St. Mary's County Department of Economic and Community Development, was elected President of Maryland's Economic Development Association (MEDA) for the 2006-2007 program year.

John Savich has served as the director of the St. Mary's County Economic Development Department since his appointment in May 2001. A resident of Leonardtown, Mr. Savich is also a member of the Leadership Maryland Class of 2004. He was designated by MEDA to serve as the statewide economic development representative on the Governor's Development Capacity Task Force. In previous years, he served as Vice-President, Secretary and Membership Co-Chair of MEDA.

"We are extremely proud to have Mr. Savich working for St. Mary's County. Our citizens and businesses, locally and statewide, are served well by his leadership and expertise in the field of economic and community development," said Thomas F. McKay, President, St. Mary's County Board of Commissioners.

Established in 1961, MEDA is a nonprofit organization promoting the economic well being of Maryland by working to improve the effectiveness of state and local economic development programs.

The MEDA membership includes 485 economic development professionals employed by government, business, chambers of commerce, and other institutions. Through regular meetings, special programs and projects, members address diverse issues such as technology development, workforce, international trade, tourism, and finance and their relationship to the business community.

Other officers elected at the Association's Annual Meeting earlier this month were Timothy R. Troxell, CEcD, Executive Director of the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission, Vice-President; Kendl P. Philbrick, Secretary, Maryland Department of the Environment, Secretary; Sean Looney, Senior Director, Government Affairs for Comcast, Treasurer; and Marie S. Keegin, CEcD, Executive Director of the Frederick County Office of Economic Development, Immediate Past President.
