Search Continues for Body of VIP Missing in Chesapeake Bay


ANNAPOLIS—The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) are continuing their ongoing efforts to search for Philip Merrill who was reported missing Saturday, June 10, after his sailboat was found near Breezy Point in Calvert County.

Recovery operations are being conducted by the NRP from sunrise to sunset. Currently, six boats have been assigned to this mission. At 8:00 a.m., the aviation unit of the NRP searched the area of interest for two hours. The helicopter will resume efforts at 3:00 p.m. for another two hours. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the side scan sonar, a device used to scan the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay, will be operational until late this afternoon. Thus far, over 3 square miles of the approximately 100 square mile search area have been searched with the side scan sonar.
