On June 3 at 11:29 a.m., Charles County Sheriffs officers responded to the La Plata Exxon located at 6670 Crain Highway in La Plata for a report of an armed robbery. The investigation revealed that the suspect entered the store, made a purchase, and asked if a manager was on duty. An employee, a 37-year-old Woodbridge, Va., man, told the suspect he was the only person in the store. The suspect then left the store.
The suspect returned a short time later. He gave the employee a note demanding money and brandished a handgun. The employee complied with his demand and the suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
During the course of the investigation, officers received a tip from a citizen and obtained information indicating Joseph Leon Savoy, III, 19, of Newburg was responsible for the robbery. He was arrested on June 7 and charged with armed robbery, robbery, first- and second-degree assault and theft. Savoy was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner. Det. F. Tona investigated.
