The St. Mary's County Board of Commissioners and Department of Aging have announced that under Governor Ehrlich's pilot program "Accessible Homes 4 Seniors Initiative", residents of St. Mary's County age 55 and over with incomes not exceeding 80% of the statewide median can apply for accessibility related home improvement loans.
The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) in partnership with the Maryland Department of Aging are working to promote accessibility related improvements to the homes of seniors. The program provides zero percent interest, deferred loans for a term of 30 years to finance accessibility improvements such as the installation of grab bars and railings, widening of doorways, installation of ramps and possibly the relocation of bathrooms. Home improvements such as these represent for many older homeowners the key to remaining in their homes and maintaining their independence. These loans are available to homeowners' who are currently experiencing a need for these items or to those who are planning for the future.
