Hoyer Hosts U.S. Academy and Military Career Forum

UPPER MARLBORO, MD - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) hosted the 25th Annual U.S. Academy and Military Career Forum at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro on Monday to give students from Maryland's 5th Congressional District an opportunity to learn more about an interesting and fulfilling career in the United States Military. The forum featured representatives of the U.S. Service Academies, local University ROTC Programs and Military Service Recruiters.

"I was pleased that so many students from the 5th Congressional District have an interest in taking advantage of a tremendous opportunity and learning about what it takes to attend one of our nation's fine military academies," said Congressman Hoyer. "Our nation has demanded a great sacrifice from our military men and women and it is reassuring to have met so many motivated young men and women who are eager to serve their country."

Every year Congressman Hoyer nominates outstanding candidates for admission into one of four United States Service Academies: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (Army), the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

These highly competitive institutions provide a top-notch education. In addition to teaching the leadership, discipline and communication necessary to be an officer in our nation's military, they provide a skill-set invaluable in today's job market.

In order to pursue appointment to one of these prestigious schools, students between the ages of 17 and 22 must be nominated. To begin the nomination process, students should contact Congressman Hoyer's Northern District Office to obtain the application packet. Students should write to Congressman Hoyer at 6500 Cherrywood Lane, Suite 310, Greenbelt, Maryland 20770 to let him know of their interest in a nomination between April and August.

Students who have any additional questions about the application process can contact Ms. Betty Rogers in Congressman Hoyer's Greenbelt Office at (301) 474-0119.
