Bel Alton Brawl Sends 2 to Hospital; Assailants Charged w/Attempted Murder

On April 12 at 8:25 p.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to Relax Inn, located at 9340 in Bel Alton, for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers discovered a two La Plata men, ages 20 and 24, and a 47-year-old Indian Head man were assaulted in the parking lot of the motel. The 20-year-old sustained head injuries after being hit, kicked and stomped unconscious. The Indian Head man was struck in the face with a beer bottle and sustained a serious laceration. Maryland State Police helicopters flew them to the MedStar trauma unit for treatment. The third victim was not seriously injured.

Officers obtained a description of the suspects and the Dodge Neon they were driving and broadcast a lookout. Shortly thereafter, detectives responding to the scene located the vehicle on Chinaberry Lane in Indian Head. They attempted to stop the vehicle but it sped off. It stopped a short distance away and its occupants fled on foot. Officers, including a K9 team, searched for the suspects and found two of them at a residence in the 200 block of Pine Street. Tally DeWayne Barber, 31, of La Plata and Karwin Milburn Carroll, 30, of Waldorf were arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder and first- and second-degree assault. They were held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner. The third suspect has been identified as a 33-year-old La Plata man who is wanted on child support violation charges. Charges in this incident are pending. The accused and the victims are familiar with each other. Det. C. Bean is investigating.
