Local Competition Tests Students' Computer Skills

More than 90 young computer experts enjoyed a fast-paced challenge of their literacy and programming skills during the 17th Annual Southern Maryland Regional Computer Bowl, held March 4 at Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf. The Southern Maryland Computer Bowl is sponsored by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, the College of Southern Maryland, and the public school systems in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties.

Twenty-six teams from 10 high schools in Southern Maryland took part in the Computer Bowl. In the first round of the competition, students took a written test of their computer literacy. In the second round, teams of three to four students created computer programs to solve specific problems.

Northern High School won first place with team members Chris Walker-Sherbert, David Kent, Rebecca Jackson, and Kate Pitman; the coach was Eric Stroh. Calvert High School came in second place with team members Christopher Giles, Jamie Blumberg, Colin Elliott, and Josh Kruder; their coach was Jeremy Kurutz. Huntingtown High School won third place with Jonathan Boblitt, Steven Byle, Michael Jones, and Martin Overstrom; their coach was Tom Currier. Fourth place team members from Westlake High School were Erik Zimmerman, David Wilson, Eric Jones, and Nicolas Montes; their coach was Joe Greenawalt. Winners received plaques, trophies, and U.S. Savings Bonds. Members of the first-place team also received performance awards from the College of Southern Maryland, and the members of the first- and second-place teams received memory sticks for their computers from Booz Allen Hamilton.

Employees from the college and military contractors served as judges for the competition. This year's judges were Barbara Bachand, Carrie Dalton, Sharon Essick, Mike Hammett, Leland Holmquest, Chad Kilgore, Julia Lufriu, Tyler Murray, Douglas Sanborn, Jerry Unger, and Jamie Wilds of Booz Allen Hamilton; Tom Matisick from Eagan McAllister Associates; and Joe Burgin of the College of Southern Maryland.
