Community called on to name Southern Maryland's new minor league baseball team
The Southern Maryland Professional Baseball "Name Your Team" contest is heading into extra innings and the entire Southern Maryland region is being called on to choose the team nickname from a list of six (6) finalists. Voting begins this Friday, March 31 and runs through Friday, April 14
The finalists for the "Name Your Team" contest are AVIATORS, BLUE CRABS, BLUE HERONS, EAGLES, OSPREYS AND ROCKFISH. Fans can vote by visiting the team's website at http://www.SOMDprobaseball.com/, at participating Arby's restaurants in Southern Maryland or by mail.
The finalists were chosen via the first phase of the "Name Your Team" contest, in which thousands of entries and hundreds of names were submitted online and at the FanFest event on February 18 at North Point High School, which over 4,000 people attended. A committee comprised of team personnel, league officials and representatives from the county reviewed the submitted names, along with the comments registered by the community, in establishing the list of finalists.
"This will truly be Southern Maryland's team and we can think of no better way to choose the team name then by letting the community vote," said Maryland Baseball President Jon Danos. "We continue to be overwhelmed by the response and enthusiasm for baseball in Southern Maryland and look forward to the entire community participating in the final voting and helping to name the new team."
The new, 4,500 seat, multi-purpose entertainment complex will be located on Piney Church Road, off of Billingsley Road, between Routes 5 and 301, just south of Waldorf. Opening Day is slated for spring of 2007. The team will play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
In addition to voting online and at Arby's locations, fans can also mail in their vote to Southern Maryland Baseball, P.O. Box 1677, Waldorf, MD 20604. Entries must be received by midnight on April 14, 2006 and are limited to one (1) vote per person.
