Seatbelt Stop Nets Drug Arrest


POSSESSION OF CDS WITH INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE: 02/16/06 6:13 p.m. A vehicle traveling northbound on U.S. Rt. 301 in the area of Mattawoman Drive was stopped for the operator not wearing his seatbelt. Upon contact with the driver, Derick Anthony Baumgardner, 20 years, of Suitland, an odor of burnt marijuana was emitting from the vehicle. A probable cause search was being conducted when the passenger, Timothy Rayshaud Grimes, 19 years, of Waldorf, attempted to flee the scene on foot. TFC M. Crawford had the scene secured while TFC J. Edelen and TFC S. Johnson chased Mr. Grimes. Mr. Grimes was apprehended a short distance away. An anonymous source informed TFC Crawford that Mr. Baumgardner entered the vehicle and threw items onto the roadway. A search of the roadway revealed several large baggies with suspected marijuana and a large baggie with numerous small baggies.

Mr. Baumgardner and Mr. Grimes were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Grimes was also charged with fleeing and eluding uniformed police. They were incarcerated in the Charles County Detention Center pending a bond review. TFC J.
