Mechanicsville Man Arrested for Assaulting Victim with a Vehicle


Victim was listed in critical but stable condition

On February 2, 2006, patrol officers responded to a Mechanicsville address for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident. It was later discovered a vehicle was used to assault the victim, Duwayne A. Cooper, 31 of Mechanicsville. Detectives from the St. Mary’s County Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to conduct the investigation.

The suspect, John E. Butler, 30 of Mechanicsville, used a motor vehicle to assault the victim before fleeing the scene. The victim was flown to Prince Georges Shock Trauma Center for his injuries (Broken shoulder, broken leg and collapsed lung).

Butler was subsequently located and charged with Felony Assault. He was incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner. The victim was listed in critical but stable condition.
