When construction workers work near roadways, speeding motorists pose a serious and sometimes deadly hazard. To protect those workers and remind drivers of the importance of obeying the speed limit in work zones, the Charles County Sheriff's Office Traffic Operations Unit conducted an aggressive speed enforcement initiative at a work zone on Leonardtown Road in Hughesville on Feb. 13 and 14.
Officers stopped numerous vehicles for exceeding the 40 mph work zone speed limit . They issued 48 citations and two warnings during the operation. They also cited two drivers who had suspended licenses.
The Sheriff's Office reminds citizens to control their speed while driving through work zones and recognize the dangers construction crews working in those areas face. Under Maryland law, the fine on a speeding ticket may be doubled if the violation occurs in a work area.
