Nominations are now being accepted for Outstanding Mathematics and Science Teacher of the Year awards to honor elementary, middle, and high school teachers. Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) and the school systems of Calvert, Charles, and St. Marys counties have sponsored outstanding teacher awards since 1992.
Nominations may come from current or former students, parents, school principals, fellow educators, and administrators. Teachers may also nominate themselves. Any mathematics or science teacher working at a school in SMECOs service area is eligible. Last year, 12 teachers were selected by committee based on their qualifications and demonstrated excellence in their field.
Teachers are chosen for their outstanding performance in the areas of creativity, rapport with students, enthusiasm for teaching, professionalism, and innovative teaching methods. Each teacher receives a plaque and a check for $250. The deadline for nominations is February 17. Awards will be presented at a dinner to be held in honor of the recipients in April.
