Charles County Sheriff's Office Continues Project ChildSafe Initiative
The Charles County Sheriff's Office is continuing to distribute free gunlocks as part of Project ChildSafe, the initiative that supplies the locks and is reporting great success for its first two years of operation.
Project ChildSafe began partnering with law enforcement agencies around the country in September 2003 to offer the free gunlocks. Since the program's inception, Project ChildSafe officials have distributed 32 million gunlock safety kits, which include a lock and educational materials, to 50 states and five U.S. territories, including 376,870 kits in Maryland, according to a progress report released by the program. The report also says Project ChildSafe is the nation's largest and most comprehensive firearm safety education program.
"With our Constitutional right to bear arms in this country comes a great responsibility to safely handle and store the firearms we keep," said Charles County Sheriff Frederick E. Davis. "It is important for gun owners to take this responsibility very seriously. By putting a gunlock on each of their firearms, they can help protect children and prevent a tragedy from occurring."
The Sheriff's Office has the gunlocks available for free at the district stations located at 6855 Crain Highway in La Plata, 4401 Indian Head Highway in Indian Head and 2160 Old Washington Road in Waldorf. For more information about Project ChildSafe, visit http://www.projectchildsafe.org/.
