Bryantown Man Arrested for mid-December Robbery

Detectives with the Charles County Sheriff's Office have arrested Christopher Michael Smith, 26, of Bryantown in connection with a mid-December robbery of a citizen inside a Wawa gas station convenience store.

Sheriff's officers responded to the Wawa, which is located at 11505 Berry Road in Waldorf, on Dec. 14 at 8:57 p.m. for the report of a strong armed robbery. Investigation revealed a 21-year-old Waldorf woman withdrew money from the ATM inside the store. A man standing behind her grabbed her and then grabbed the money. They struggled briefly but the man overpowered her and stole the money. He was seen fleeing the business south on Western Parkway in a black pickup truck. The woman was not injured.

Det. Christopher Shankster began investigating the case and discovered the same suspect had been involved in similar robberies that evening in Prince George's County. The detective also obtained several photographs of the suspect from the Wawa security camera. During his investigation, the detective took the photograph to the Charles County Detention Center, where a correctional officer identified the suspect as Smith. Det. Shankster obtained a warrant for Smith's arrest Jan. 3, charging him with robbery, second degree assault and theft less than $100. Smith was arrested the same day by a warrant officer and is being held at the Charles County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.
