Stop Sticks Nab Car Thief


On Dec. 29 at 10:13 p.m., Officer K. Martinez attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Toyota Camry on southbound Crain Highway near Pierce Road in Waldorf for speeding but the driver did not stop and continued south.

As officers pursued the vehicle, they found it had been stolen in Prince George's County. Officers deployed stop sticks, which the driver struck, causing the vehicle to stop near Charles Street in La Plata. The driver fled the vehicle but officers quickly apprehended him.

The driver was identified as Garrett Vernon Nelson, Jr., 37, of Hyattsville, Md. He was arrested and charged with fleeing and eluding, theft of a motor vehicle and numerous traffic charges. He is being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.
