Snow Conditions Cause Death of Charlotte Hall Boy

12/05/06 6:12 p.m.

A 1990 Honda Accord being operated by Andrew Preston Rutter, 29 years, of La Plata, was traveling eastbound on MD Rt. 6, west of Dubois Road. A 2000 Yamaha Big Bear ATV, being operated by Tony Burton Sherman, 43 years, of Charlotte Hall, was traveling westbound on the grass parallel to MD Rt. 6. The ATV was pulling a sled with three juveniles on it. Due to snow and reduced visibility, Mr. Rutter thought the ATV was coming at him head-on, so he took evasive action and slid off the roadway, subsequently striking the sled.

Jeremy Colton Caleco, 5 years, of Charlotte Hall, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Christiana Grace Zell, 11 years, of Charlotte Hall, received incapacitating injuries, and was transported to Children's Hospital by ambulance where she is listed in critical condition.

Joseph Anthony Zell, 10 years, of Charlotte Hall, received minor injuries and was transported to Civista Medical Center by ambulance.

TFC J. Scott is continuing the investigation. The Charles County Sheriff's Office Traffic Operation Section is assisting with the investigation.
