Will Meet With Students of Federally Funded Afterschool Program
LEXINGTON PARK, MD - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) will visit the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) at Lexington Park Elementary on Monday, December 5th at 4:30 p.m. He will observe their activities and speak to some of the 80 students who attend this federally funded program on an average day.
The purpose of the 21st CCLC program is to establish or expand community learning centers that provide students with academic enrichment opportunities along with activities designed to complement the students' regular academic program.
The program, which is federally funded and now administered by the State, serves 1.4 million students across the country, including 18,600 in Maryland.
The following dignitaries are expected to be in attendance: Congressman Steny Hoyer; Dr. Michael Martirano, Superintendent, St. Mary's County Public Schools; Mark Smith, St. Mary's County School System Special Programs; Mr. Rudy Jones, Principal, Lexington Park Elementary; JoAnn Carter, Assistant State Superintendent, Maryland State Department of Education; and Vanessa Diggs, Specialist for Afterschool Programs, Maryland State Department of Education.
