Waldorf Teen Burglar Assaults Officer

On Oct. 9 at 5:41 a.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers responded to Osborne Court in Waldorf for a citizen's report of suspicious persons.

Upon arrival, Cpl. W. Welch observed two males flee into the woods. Officer S. Kirsch responded to the bike path behind Benjamin Stoddert Middle School on St. Thomas Drive in Waldorf and observed one male exit the woods.

As Officer Kirsch approached him, another male lunged toward Officer Kirsch, struck him and began to flee. A brief foot chase ensued but Officer Kirsch, with the help of two additional officers, apprehended the male, who was identified as a 16-year-old Waldorf boy. He was found to be in possession of burglary tools.

He was charged with second degree assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, obstructing and hindering, failure to obey a lawful order and possession of burglary tools.

This is the first time in Charles County anyone has been charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer since a law became effective Oct. 1 making such assaults a felony. Officer Kirsch sustained a minor injury.
