A-10 takes off at Air Expo ‘05

The 23rd Fighter Group East Coast A-10 Demonstration Team will showcase the superior performance characteristics of this close air support aircraft during Air Expo ’05 here Sept. 3 and 4. Parking and admission for Air Expo ’05 are free. Gates open at 9 a.m.

The A-10 is a simple, effective, and survivable twin-engine jet aircraft that can be used against all ground targets, and is especially effective against tanks and other armored vehicles. The A-10 has excellent maneuverability at low air speeds and altitude, and is highly accurate weapons-delivery platform. It can loiter near battle areas for extended periods of time and operate under 1,000-foot ceilings with 1.5-mile visibility. Its wide combat radius and short takeoff and landing capability permit operations in and out of locations near front lines.

The A-10 Demonstration Team’s mission is to positively affect Air Force recruitment and retention efforts; keep the public and military informed of U.S. Air Force preparedness; demonstrate modern weapon systems; promote community and international relations and reinforce public confidence in the Air Force; and demonstrate to the public the professional competence of Air Force members.

The Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, headline Air Expo ’05 and will highlight the graceful, high-precision maneuvers of the four-plane "diamond" and fast-paced high performance maneuvers of the solo pilots in the number five and six jets. All six jets will then perform together in the renowned delta formation.

Also headlining the show will be the Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights. Civilian performers include aerobatic pilot Patty Wagstaff in her Extra 300S, Dale Snodgrass in his F-86 Sabre, the Yak Demonstration Team and Dan Buchanan in his motorless Airwave glider.

No weapons or explosives, coolers, alcoholic beverages, glass containers, pets, bicycles, roller blades, skateboards, scooters or backpacks are permitted on the show site. Vehicles, diaper bags and camera bags will be searched.

NAS Patuxent River is located in the Washington region and reports to Naval District Washington for Shore Installation Management.

KR Systems and Nextel are sponsors of Air Expo ’05. However, neither the Navy nor any other part of the federal government endorses any company, sponsor or their products or services.
