Harpers Ferry Man Killed in Charlotte Hall Accident


On Monday, August 8, 2005, at 0934 AM, a White 1993 Honda Accord station wagon operated by Charles Francis Cole of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia was traveling south on Maryland route 5 in Charlotte Hall, St. Mary's County, Maryland. This vehicle made a left turn from Route 5 at the access road to the Charlotte Hall Farmers Market failing to yield the right of way to Northbound traffic and was struck by 2001 Dodge truck operated by John Thomas Okoniewski of Lusby, Calvert County, Maryland. This vehicle then struck a 1996 International tractor trailer operated by Early Clinton Cox Jr. of Huntington, Calvert County, Maryland. Mr. Cole suffered life threatening injuries as a result of the accident and Mr. Cox administered rescue breathing at the scene, until he was relieved by Dep. Jay Kirkner of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. The two were able to revive Mr. Cole and were relieved by Charles County emergency personnel who transported Cole to Prince Georges County Shock Trauma Center. Mr. Cole's condition deteriorated and he died as a result of his injuries on 08/09/05 at 0826 AM. An accident investigation is being conducted by SDFC Emory Johnson of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.
