Calvert Sheriff to Assist MSP in DNA Collections

Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans and State Police Colonel Thomas E. “Tim” Hutchins met on June 9th, 2005 to sign a DNA Collection memorandum of understanding. The Sheriff’s Office will assist the Maryland State Police by collecting DNA samples from qualified criminal offenders. Sheriff Evans confirmed trained personnel would collect the DNA. The collected samples will be turned over to the State Police and uploaded to the Maryland DNA database.

Colonel Hutchins has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce the backlog of DNA samples required to be collected from offenders. He has asked for the assistance of county sheriff’s and jail administrators to collect samples in their detention centers as offenders as offenders enter the criminal justice system following conviction.
