Local Sheriff's Offices to Participate in Law Enforcement Torch Run

On Tuesday, June 14th, 2005 at 10:00 am, members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police will be accepting the Special Olympics Torch from the St. Mary’s County Office. They will begin the Calvert County leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The Calvert County portion of the run will start at the Solomons Visitor’s Center and proceed north on Md. Rt. 4 to Prince Frederick, Md. Runners will continue west on Md. Rt. 231 to The Benedict Bridge where runners will hand off the torch to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office for their leg of the run.

According to the Special Olympics website, "The Torch Run is Special Olympics’ largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, raising more than US$20.5 million for Special Olympics Programs around the world in 2004. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers carried the Flame of Hope across 35 nations, and thousands more supported the runners’ efforts through “Adopt-A-Cop” runner sponsorships, corporate sponsorships and Torch Run T-shirts (more than 400,000 sold) and other merchandise sales."
