St. Mary's County Board of Commissioners and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services are pleased to invite the public to the Ribbon Cutting for Phase II of Nicolet Park and Flag Dedication Ceremony on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at 4:00 p.m. The park is located at 21777 Bunker Hill Drive, Lexington Park. Bunker Hill Drive is accessed from Midway Drive off of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park.
Phase II improvements include two basketball courts, a baseball field, a multi-purpose field, a water sprayground, accessible pathways and a picnic pavilion. Phase I improvements were completed in 2003 and included an accessible playground, picnic areas, the County's first skatepark, two restroom buildings, parking and an entrance road.
The flag dedication ceremony will honor ADRC Joe Shepherd USN, Retired. Chief Shepherd was an exemplary volunteer youth baseball coach in Lexington Park in the 1970's and an outstanding citizen who faithfully served his local community and Country. A volunteer fundraising effort for the flagpole and plaque was spearheaded by retired Master Chiefs from Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Representatives from Patuxent River Naval Air Station will join the Commissioners for the dedication ceremony.
"We are pleased with the final completion of Nicolet Park for the citizens of St. Mary's County, stated Thomas F. McKay, President, Board of County Commissioners. The dedication of the flag pole at the park acknowledges contributions by Chief Shepherd during his life and represents our appreciation for community volunteerism."
