Public Comment Sought On Draft 2005 Land Preservation, Parks And Recreation Plan

The St. Mary's County Planning Commission, Recreation and Parks Board and the Agricultural Land Preservation Advisory Board invite the public to a meeting on Monday, May 9, 2005 to provide input and public comment on the draft 2005 St. Mary's County Land Preservation, Parks and Recreation Plan (LPPRP). The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., in the Central Hall of the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, 44219 Airport Road, in California, Maryland.

The LPPRP is an important document for identifying recreation, agricultural and natural open space preservation needs both in the County and the Town of Leonardtown and, once adopted, will set county policies and actions to address those needs for the upcoming five to ten year period. The LPPRP is updated every five years and offers the opportunity to reassess priorities in light of population growth and changing economic, social and market conditions. New State guidelines place greater emphasis on a more integrated approach to open space, agricultural land preservation and natural resource preservation. The St. Mary's' County plan, along with the plans from other counties, will be used by the State to guide planning, funding and programs to meet land preservation, parks and recreation needs statewide.

For more information on the public meeting or the draft LPPRP, please contact Phillip Rollins, Director, St. Mary's County Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services at (301) 475-4200 ext. 1811, or e-mail phil.rollins@co.saint-marys.md.us. Citizens may download a copy of the draft plan at http://www.co.saint-marys.md.us/recreate or make a request to the Public Information Office at pio@co.saint-marys.md.us or 301-475-4200 extension 1340.
