On April 14 at 2:44 p.m., Charles County Sheriff's Officers responded to the intersection of Washington Avenue and Heritage Green Parkway in La Plata for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a school bus. Investigation revealed a Charles County Public Schools bus was traveling northbound on Washington Avenue when it struck the rear of a 2001 Chevrolet pick-up truck, which had stopped in the northbound lane behind a 2002 Ford Expedition that had stopped to make a left turn onto Heritage Green Parkway. After the bus struck the pick-up truck, the pick-up truck struck the Expedition. The driver of the pick-up truck, Chad Loy Nutwell, 35, of La Plata, sustained incapacitating injuries and was transported by ambulance to Civista Medical Center. The driver of the Expedition, Paul Sylvester Thompson, Jr., 40, of Mechanicsville, did not sustain any injuries. Both were wearing their seatbelts. The driver of the school bus, Jane Margaret Hayden, 69, of Newburg, and the 30 students on the bus were also not injured. Hayden was issued a citation for failing to control speed to avoid a collision. The students were being transported from Matula Elementary School. Alternate transportation arrangements for the students were handled by the Charles County School Board. Officer S. Stanley investigated.
