Armed Home Invasion; Suspect Killed by Resident

On April 6 at 3:54 a.m., Charles County Sheriff's Officers responded to a residence in the 6900 block of Heather Drive in Bryans Road for the report of a shooting. Investigation revealed Clayton Maurice Smith, 43, of Bryans Road, forced entry into the residence and began assaulting a 54-year-old Washington, D.C., man by striking him several times in the head with a metal pipe. A 43-year-old woman who lives at the residence retrieved a handgun and shot Smith. He died at the scene. Smith is the woman's ex-boyfriend and the other man is the woman's current boyfriend. Smith resided with the woman until December 2004 and the woman had obtained a protective order against him. Smith violated the protective order two times and had two outstanding arrest warrants for those violations.

The man Smith assaulted was transported to Civista Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Smith was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy. Charles County Sheriff's Office is working with the Charles County State's Attorney Office to determine whether charges will be filed against the woman. Det. T. Miner is investigating.
