The Prince Frederick Barrack is a full service law enforcement operation providing services to a population of approximately 80,000 people. Calvert County is 213 square miles and has 101 miles of shoreline with the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River. All emergency 911 calls are received at a central emergency communications center and simulcasted to Troopers and Deputies on patrol. This provides the quickest response to those in need of getting the closest emergency service provider as possible to the affected area. The Barrack's CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) recorded 21,882 calls for service in 2001 and 21,450 calls for service in 2002. The Prince Frederick Barrack conducted 1,601 criminal investigations in 2001 and 1,535 criminal investigations in 2001. Geographically, Calvert County is the smallest county in the State of Maryland. However, since 1990 and up through 2001, it has been identified by Maryland's Department of Planning as being the fastest or one of the fastest growing counties in Maryland. Southern Maryland (Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties) has enjoyed the benefits and endured the negative consequences of the noted population increases. Charles and St. Mary's Counties have also experienced significant population increases. Those living in or employed within Charles or St. Mary's Counties frequently commute through Calvert County. These commuters have created a significant increase in traffic. Police personnel are constantly challenged by motor vehicle crash related calls.
