It seems that every year the tuition for higher education gets higher and higher. Even the interest rates on student loans are out of control. Fortunately, there are many resources for financial aid available to the parent and student willing to invest the time to seek them out. In addition to federal grants and loan guarantee programs there is a smorgasbord of local and national scholarships available. Many local scholarships go unclaimed because no applications are received.
We've compiled a list of local resources that you can use to help you get the money you need. All of the experts we talked to tell us that the key is to both start early and invest the time necessary to explore all available avenues.

BECA is a local non-profit org that was co-founded in 1989 by the St. Mary's County Chamber of Commerce and the Superintendent of Schools to help get available scholarship funds into the hands of deserving St. Mary's County, Md. students. We found that there were so many different scholarships available, that students were overwhelmed and ended up applying for relatively few, leaving a lot of money unclaimed and many students in need. One of out programs is the "Passport to the Future" program which rewards good attendance and academic performance with financial incentives offered by local merchants. Do well in school and save some bucks at the mall.
We also offer a Common Scholarship Application that allows parent to apply once for several locally offered scholarship programs. This can save you a tremendous amount of time.

The College of Southern Maryland Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization governed by a corporate board of directors. Established in 1970, the mission of the Foundation is to promote academic excellence, growth, progress, and the general welfare of the college. The Foundation raises and manages funds, and provides support to strengthen and develop the college, and its objectives.Giving to the College of Southern Maryland goes far beyond bricks and mortar; giving is your investment in our CSM students and ultimately in our community's future. Each student's success in large part is due to the support the CSM Foundation receives from you--individuals who collectively have given more than $1 million to the CSM Foundation in the past five years. These dollars build on our community's most valuable asset--our people--by providing them with scholarships to begin their higher education pursuits, by supplying them with classroom technology so they can be competitive in the workforce, and by offering them resources that enrich their lives through nurturing childcare, vibrant arts, and wellness opportunities.
