The Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) was founded in 1977 as a project of the Mayor's Office of the City of Baltimore to preserve the City's rapidly disappearing industrial heritage. In 1981, it incorporated as a private non-profit educational institution. In May of that year, the BMI moved into the historic Platt Oyster Cannery building (c.1870) in South Baltimore.
