More Details:

St. Mary's Hospital is a 107-bed full-service hospital that delivers state-of-the-art emergency, acute inpatient and outpatient services. Founded in 1912, SMH is a nonprofit community hospital with a long history of serving the health care needs of Southern Maryland. Our mission is to uphold our tradition of caring by continuously promoting, maintaining and improving health through education and service while assuring fiscal integrity.

SMH provides a full range of state-of-the-art medical, surgical, orthopedic, obstetric, pediatric, psychiatric, and emergency care to patients of all ages. We also offer outpatient services including oncology and hematology, physical therapy, and nutritional counseling, plus extensive diagnostic services including MRI, CT scanning, mammography, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine, laboratory services, EKG IEEG, and pulmonary diagnostics.

More than 125 physicians covering a variety of specialties work together with 600+ professional SMH employees to provide personalized care to each of our patients.

SMH is licensed by the State of Maryland and fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Like all Maryland hospitals, we are regulated by the Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC), which sets hospital rates for services rendered. SMH is proud of its record as one of the most efficiently managed hospitals in the state, allowing patients to pay the lowest rates for the best in health care services.

SMH is "owned" by the SMH Association, whose membership is comprised of residents of St. Mary's County. Members elect the community volunteers who serve on the SMH Board of Directors.

We are fortunate to have many volunteers who are dedicated to SMH and the services it provides to our community. The SMH Auxiliary provides many services as well as funding; the SMH Foundation works to raise funds to provide for the future of our hospital. Other volunteers, from teens to senior citizens, provide a helping hand in many areas of the hospital.

Our recent expansion project, completed in the Summer of 1995, increased and improved SMH patient care facilities and access to our Emergency, Outpatient Infusion, Surgery and Diagnostic Services departments. The project added 38,000 square feet to the first floor, at a cost of $6.5 million. Other areas of the hospital have or will also undergo renovation to increase the level of patient care and comfort throughout.

SMH provides learning experiences for area students, offers a wide range of wellness classes, and participates in the Health Share program for those who are uninsured. With compassion and dedication, SMH is committed to the health of all in the St. Mary's County community.
