   National Lighthouse Weekend at Piney Point Lighthouse

Head to Piney Point for a fun Open House weekend in recognition of National Lighthouse Day, which is officially celebrated each year on August 7th. Enjoy tours of the museum, Potomac River Maritime Exhibit, lighthouse tower and grounds.
The official day as designated by Congress, August 7, 1989, is the anniversary of the signing of the August 7, 1789 Congressional Act “for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers” and the date of the first commissioned Federal lighthouse.
Call 301-994-1471 for more information. FREE ADMISSION.
TBA: The keeper’s quarters and lighthouse will offer special tours featuring interpreters who depict Lightkeeper Yeatman and his wife, who will tell visitors more about life at the lighthouse.
TBA: This year is the 185th anniversary of Piney Point Lighthouse! Stay tuned for special programing associated with this milestone.

Visit one of the nation's best-preserved one-room African American schoolhouses one Saturday of each month. Check out the renovated schoolhouse and learn about its rich history and importance to education in St. Mary's County. Staff will be available at the school during this time to answer any questions and provide information.

The Museum Division also offers special programs for school, bus and other tour groups who would like to visit the site. Visitors who would like to see the schoolhouse outside open house hours can contact Piney Point to arrange a visit at 301-994-1471.

Looking for people to join our am or pm feed shifts as well as many of our 'behind the scenes' opportunities. No experience necessary. At the orientation, volunteers will learn our specific feed shift routine, how to groom a horse as well as the importance of safety and awareness when working around horses. The orientation is hands on.
