Date: 3/24/2018
Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Time: 4:30 PM (08:30 Duration)

The spring season is a time for citizens to clean out barns, basements, sheds, garages, storage areas under kitchen sinks, etc. and properly discard potentially toxic/dangerous materials. Residents wishing to safely dispose of household hazardous waste materials will once again have an opportunity to do so.

The St. Andrew's Landfill will host a Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, March 24, 2018, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Hazardous waste items which will be accepted for collection include Acids, Ammonia, Bleach, Cleaners, Fuels, Gas/Oil Mixtures, Gasoline, Household and Lawn Pesticides, Mercury Thermometers, Photography Chemicals, Pool Chemicals, Solvents, Wood Preservatives, Paint Thinners, and Alkyd (oil-based) Paint. Since Latex Paint is not considered hazardous, it can be disposed with your regular trash collection as long as the mixture is harden by adding absorbents (cat litter, sand, sawdust, or paint drying crystals) prior to disposal. If, however, you are unable to do so, Latex Paint will also be accepted.

Items which will not be accepted include Ammunition, Asbestos, Explosive Materials, Medical Waste, Pharmaceuticals, Radioactive Materials and Picric Acid. Collect and dispose of your household hazardous waste materials through safe and environmentally responsible practices using the county's certified vendor, ACV Enviro.

For more information, contact the St. Mary's Department of Public Works and Transportation at 301-475-4200 or log on to www.co.saintmarys.md.us/dpw/recyclingandsolidwaste.asp

The Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center is hosting two major events on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the school site across from the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds in Leonardtown. The first event is the Scrapbooking Crop, which takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the school’s Dorhman Room. This event benefits the school’s SkillsUSA chapter but is being put on by the Ridge Lion’s Club. The cost for the event is $45 if you pay on or before March 18. If you pay on or after March 19, the cost is $50. The event includes breakfast snacks, lunch, dinner, a raffle, ½ table space, vendors and table buddies. Please bring gently used scrapbook items, paper and stamps for the brown bag portion. Non-perishable food items will also be collected for local food pantries. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/RidgeLionsClub.

In addition to the Scrapbooking Crop, the Forrest Center’s Annual Craft/Vendor Fair is taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the school’s atrium entrance area and front hallways. Local and regional crafters and vendors will be selling a wide variety of items. The public is invited to come out to enjoy a day of shopping. The deadline for crafters and vendors to reserve tables is March 22. To reserve a table or for more information, contact Bonnie Skinner at 301-475-0242, x28201 or at bjskinner@smcps.org.

Proceeds from the Craft Fair table rentals and silent auction will benefit the Forrest Center’s SkillsUSA chapter, which is among the most successful in the state. As a result of that success, the chapter must annually fundraise over $25,000 to cover the cost of leadership training, chapter activities and regional, state & national competitions. For more information about SkillsUSA, go to: www.skillsusa.org.

The event may be recorded and presented on SMCPS Channel 96, the school system’s cable channel, and the Internet. For more information about either event, contact the Forrest Center at 301-475-0242.

Taste of Solomons is a one-day food festival showcasing the many wonderful places to eat in this lovely waterfront community.

Restaurants and Shops Offer Tastes of Fine Food and Beverages

New tastes abound in the historic Solomons Town Center as restaurants showcase selected food and beverages during the one-day food festival. The event is one of the yearly signature events designed and sponsored by the Solomons Business Association, with proceeds to benefit the association’s annual July 4th fireworks display.

The Taste of Solomons provides the community a way to sample and enjoy a waterfront town during the Autumn season, according to Taste of Solomons Co Chair Christopher Donaldson.

Tickets are $4 each and may be purchased at any of the participating businesses. Each ticket can be exchanged for a sample of selected food or beverages. Many restaurants are also participating in a Gift Certificate Prize program, with some of the tickets at each location designated as prize winners. The lucky purchaser will be awarded a gift certificate for future use at the respective restaurant.

This year’s participating businesses will be announced shortly.
