Prior to the invention of synthetic dyes, how did people acquire colors for their clothing? Natural dyes have been used by the many cultures who called Piscataway Park home to add color and express personality/cultural ties within their clothing. Over the last year, we’ve gathered natural plants, berries, and nuts to use in the colorful transformation of our very own Hog Island Wool. Come and learn more about the skills used to take dyestuff gathered from our site and make natural dyes. Join our textile volunteers as they walk you through the steps and skills, enjoying the transformative beauty of natural dyes on natural fibers. The natural chemistry of dyeing is amazing!

This is a hands-on experience which will require the ability to follow directions and handle dyes. There will be the use of camp stoves and heated dye baths, so please come prepared to follow safety guidelines. We recommend this activity for youth (accompanied by a parent) ages 8 and up. Registration is required for all participants and cost is $10 per participant. All participants will have the opportunity to dye a small handspun skein of yarn and take it home. This program runs approximately 45 minutes.

We ask that social distancing be adhered to at all times, and mask wearing if social distancing is not possible will be in place to ensure a safe and fun environment for all participants and staff.
