Join the Gals of Southern Maryland for our monthly book club and brunch meet up! We'll meet every month at different places for brunch. And don't worry if you don't finish the book in time—this is really more of a recurring social event so we can all get to know each other!

February's book will be:
Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende

An orphan raised in Valparaiso, Chile, by a Victorian spinster and her rigidbrother, vivacious young Eliza Sommers follows her lover to California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Entering a rough-and-tumble world of new arrivals driven mad by gold fever, Eliza moves in a society of single men and prostitutes with the help of her good friend and savior, the Chinese doctor Tao Chi'en. California opens the door to a new life of freedom and independence for the young Chilean, and her search for her elusive lover gradually turns into another kind of journey. By the time she finally hears news of him, Eliza must decide who her true love really is.

Feel free to join us even if you haven't read or finished the book.
Please RSVP so I know how big of a table to get.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) continues its 2018-2019 Benny C. Morgan Concert Series Feb. 23 with a free performance by flutist Dr. Keith Wright at its Leonardtown Campus.

Wright, a former CSM music professor, was second flute/piccolo with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Richmond Symphony, Lexington Symphony Orchestra and the Washington Choral Arts Society.

He has also been a soloist with the Winters Chamber Orchestra and participated in various festivals including the Mostly Mozart festival at Lincoln Center. He is a prize winner of the Baur Chamber Music Competition and the University of Kansas Black Faculty and Student Council Award. He is a co-winner with mentor Dr. John Boulton of the University of Kansas of the Quest for the Best Technology Award. This award has had an impact on more than 300 music and dance students with the integration of multiple applications of advanced learning and performance software and hardware.

Benny C. Morgan was a beloved music educator in St. Mary's County schools for 30 years and served as organist and choir director in several area churches. In January 2016, Morgan donated his prized Steinway grand piano to the CSM's Leonardtown Campus. Sadly, Morgan passed away several weeks later, however, with the knowledge that his generosity will add to the musical culture of CSM's students as well as the Southern Maryland community for years to come. The Benny C. Morgan Recital Series was instituted in 2016 in his memory.

The Benny C. Morgan Series is presented by sponsors Johnny Alvey and the CSM Foundation.

The series takes place in Building A, Room 206, at the Leonardtown Campus, 22950 Hollywood Road in Leonardtown. All performances begin at 3 p.m. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. No tickets or reservations are needed. Concerts are free. For information on the Benny C. Morgan Series, visit www.csmd.edu/community/the-arts/music/benny-c-morgan-series/index.

“Humanizing Histories: 7 Short Plays about Resistance,” a festival of 10-minute student-written performance pieces, opens on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. and runs through Sunday, Feb. 24 in the Bruce Davis Theater, Montgomery Hall, on the St. Mary’s College of Maryland campus. Ticket prices are $4 for teachers, students, senior citizens, and Arts Alliance members; $6, general admission. To make reservations, email the Theater Box Office at boxoffice@smcm.edu or telephone 240-895-4243.

Produced by the Department of Theater, Film, and Media Studies (TFMS) and supervised by Assistant Professor of Theater Amy Steiger, the 10-minute play festival showcases the work of select student writers and directed by Steiger and students Blake Johnson, Kori Taber, and Rebecca Weber.

The collection of plays included in the festival gets its name, “Humanizing Histories,” from the collaborative pilot course conducted at the College on playwriting and the legacies of slavery and resistance in the United States. Each play, inspired by a different historical artifact, explores how oppression and representation affect relationships, families, and human lives, and considers various ways citizens rise up in the face of injustice.

The plays that make up the festival include “Union” by Allison Claggett, “Hashtagtivism” by Oli Platt, “Heaven Spots” by Cameron Kelley, and “Faith” by Tiye Young, each directed by Steiger; “Silence Too Loud” by Rebecca Weber, directed by Kori Taber; “Speak for Me No More” by Samantha Reed, directed by Rebecca Weber; and “Extended Metaphors for Having Conversations Surrounding Race” by McKenna Johnson, directed by Blake Johnson.

Over the weekend of the festival’s run, on Saturday, Feb. 23, members of the community are invited to attend staged readings of other student-written work, theater workshops, and public discussions free of charge. Visit the TFMS website for more information about the day’s activities (www.smcm.edu/tfms).

“Humanizing Histories: 7 Short Plays about Resistance” performs Feb. 20-23 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. An informal talk-back with cast, crew, playwrights, and directors follows the opening night performance. Refreshments will be provided. Post-performance discussions take place after subsequent performances as well.
